It can be done quick, cheap, or well — but never all three.
This is wisdom I learned early on in the event world.
When the show LITERALLY has to go on, at THIS time — there’s no wiggle room.
There’s no “Ah well, I think we can push that an iteration or two”
It’s a very different world compared to enterprise projects.
I am grateful for that time in my life, as it’s allowed for a unique perspective.
An eye for potential pitfalls, an ability to estimate exactly how much time and effort something should take, and knowing when to cut my losses and switch direction.
That last bit is really, really hard sometimes. It’s why SO many companies get trapped in an “idea” of what they want, rather than what they actually need.
Don’t let inertia, “this is how it’s always been done” history, or fear of the unknown lock you into complacency.
The grass can be greener.
Work with the right people, get what you need. Don’t settle for easy.
Remember that something rushed, a “temporary fix”, or “We just need to move this over for now, we can come back and fix it later” — will ALWAYS bring heartache.
Accept your failures and switch gears when you need to.
If you’re lost and don’t know which way is up, find an expert!!
Because your time is always your most valuable asset. Don’t waste it going in circles and settling for “good enough”.
