One of the things about working in a project based role, is you build up a lot of retrospectives.
Metrics and milestones to look back on, how you’ve improved, what’s worked, what doesn’t, the whole deal.
But like any pursuit, you start to compare to other milestones. How much further can you go? Who’s the top of your field?
Then you start making wild comparisons.
My well of inspiration usually goes back to amazing Engineering projects, where everyone thought it was impossible at the start.
Things like the Apollo missions, or the Golden Gate Bridge, TransAtlantic cables, Railroads, Submarines, Supply Chains and innovations supporting numerous military campaigns, etc etc.
And you think to yourself, “Bet those guys never put their tasks up on a Kanban board, picked low hanging fruit, circled back, or drilled into KPIs”
They got it done. In many cases changing the world along the way.
Granted, mortality rate was atrocious and I’m sure “work life balance” would have been a laughable concept.
But it is good to reflect on, with enough effort, just about anything is possible.
Go build something awesome.
Do the thing!
